Set on the Morgenster wine and olive estate in Somerset West, this house is home to a restaurant with views of the magnificent Helderberg mountains. We sat outside on a beautiful day with an expanse of lawn and a feeling of space all around us.
The wine list is small and not cheap and includes local and imported wines. We chose a bottle of Morgenster’s wine from their Bordeaux range.
On offer was a four course tasting menu which as the whole table was not going to choose, we did not take as an option. The menu is marked for week 51 and so I am going to presume it changes on a weekly basis. There is an antipasto option at R30 for the table but we decided to get stuck straight in to the food. The menu has a set price, 2 courses for R155 and 3 courses for R220 per person – great if you are not there for a one course meal.
4 starters were on offer and between the 7 of us, we chose 3 of the options; apple and fennel soup, paw paw and shredded chicken salad, and by far the most popular, magret duck breast.
From the choice of 4 main courses the braised line fish and the fillet of beef were equal in selection, with one person choosing the dukka spiced petite poissin.
Only 4 of us had desserts – two peach upside down puddings that were not tarte tatin’s, and 2 chocolate frangipani and pear tarts. Both were served with an amazing ice cream – one amaretto and one chocolate sorbet.
Service needs some attention but the manager was fantastic and really knew her way around the menu.

Our lunch was followed by a tasting of olives and olive oil, as well as the Italian wines at Morgenster. We were talked through a fantastic tasting by Katherine who is an asset to the establishment.

All in all it comes across as a rather classy establishment
very classy but not with to strict a dress code which works well for Dave!
