Bettyhill Hotel, Highlands, Scotland

Bettyhill Hotel

If you find yourself in the north of Scotland, whether you are doing the 500 North Coast Route, or just driving about, Bettyhill Hotel is the perfect stop. The hotel is privately owned and reminds me of times gone by.

There is a private lounge for hotel guests, a bar and rooms offering views of the mountains and Torrisdale Bay. This quaint hotel, in its rural setting, was built in 1819. Gabi met us at the reception and showed us around before taking us to our room. Chris was on duty to check us out and he has done all the refurbishing work himself.

The rooms

There are many types of rooms in the hotel, and we were lucky enough to be in one that has just been renovated. Take care when booking as some rooms have a shared bathroom and others are en-suite. They also have family rooms which is great for people travelling with children. We were in room 21 and it has a very comfortable bed, a small screen television which Dave turned on straight away to watch the news. I made us coffee with the facilities in the room and we enjoyed that with the complimentary biscuits. We both made good use of the wi-fi to check on emails and see what was happening at work. The hot water takes some time to come through but the shower is great. Bathroom amenities are provided, but there is only one small bath towel per person.

Dave and I enjoy a wee dram with our meal as often as we drink wine. For our meal we choose the Glenfarclas 10 year old and the Strathisla 12 year old. Dave and I shared scallops to start and then moved on to our main course. North Sea Haddock for me as I was on a battered fish mission, and Scrabster Salmon for Dave.

Breakfast is included in the room rate and we start off with croissants and coffee. We have a choice of cooked breakfasts and we go for the full Scottish breakfast which includes a potato scone and a poached egg.

Worth knowing

The area offers salmon fishing on the River Naver as well as walking and cycling routes. The bar is fairly noisy but that will die down at a reasonable time. You might even be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights, something that is on my bucket list. Contact them on: +44 1641 521202
