Bocadillos, Walmer, Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Trying to find a restaurant for 12 people can be quite daunting. And usually I leave that sort of detail up to someone else. When we were in Port Elizabeth in May a booking was made at Bocadillos. This bakery and restaurant is open 7 days a week serving dinner Monday to Saturday. You are more than welcome to bring your own wine, which we did. Corkage is charged at a very reasonable R40 per bottle. Their wine prices are also reasonable.

We met for dinner at the Walmer branch shortly before 7pm. It is worth keeping in mind that the kitchen closes at 9pm so you need to plan for an early meal. Allen, our waiter, was attentive and ensured that our order was dealt with promptly. The kitchen managed to get our meal out without too long a wait which was an added bonus.

Our meal

The most popular choice at our table was the pork belly (R119). Dave had this, but he noted that it was actually rashers. However, they tasted good which is more to the point. Eric and I went for the slow roasted oxtail (R149) and it was excellent. Other choices at our table included chorizo pizza (R95), exotic mushroom pasta (R99), Boca steak pizza (R109), chicken schnitzel (R99), naked burger (R109) and a smoked salmon salad (R106). It is the norm in South Africa that restaurants add gratuity to tables of 8 people or more so I was surprised to see this had not been done. And I appreciated it had not been so we could add our own tip, based on our experience. The meal, drinks and gratuity came to R2400 which I thought was very reasonable.
