Broccoli And Crayfish Pasta

Using seasonal produce and locally sourced shellfish, I made Broccoli And Crayfish Pasta for the Secret Recipe Club.

This month, my assigned blogger for The Secret Recipe Club was Sara from Cook with Sara. Sara loves to cook and eat and thankfully for us, share her recipes. I love her mom’s philosophy on cooking as it was the same philosophy my Gran had and my mom has. Sara uses every day ingredients which is perfect for me as I live in a small fishing village with very little access to anything exotic. Sara has an extensive list of recipes to choose from and I spent a long afternoon browsing her blog. I eventually turned to Sara’s list of favourites to choose a recipe to make. After much reading, I chose the pasta with garlic shrimp and broccoli, which I have adapted. We spend a lot of time crayfishing and I decided to use some crayfish instead of shrimp. Shrimp here are tiny little things as small as the tip of my pinky finger. Anything larger we call prawns. For this recipe even langoustine tails would do, so use what is available close to where you live.

what shellfish is caught where you live?

  • 200 g pasta of your choice (I used penne)
  • 100 g broccoli florets, cut into bite size pieces
  • 25 g butter
  • 25 g flour
  • 250 mls vegetable stock
  • 2.5 mls dried parsley
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to season
  • 15 mls olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • 1.25 mls dried red chilli
  • 2 courgettes, sliced
  • 2 crayfish tails, sliced

  • Place a large pot of water onto the boil for your pasta
  • When the water has boiled, salt the water generously and add the pasta
  • Add the broccoli for the last 2 minutes of cooking time
  • While the pasta water is heating start on the sauce
  • In a small saucepan, over a medium heat, melt the butter
  • Add the flour and stir for 1 minute to allow the flour to cook
  • Gradually add the stock while whisking
  • Add the parsley and season and leave to simmer and thicken, whisking occasionally
  • Once you have put the pasta in to cook, heat the oil in the largest frying pan you own
  • Add the garlic and the chilli and sauté until the garlic is soft
  • Add the courgettes and the crayfish and season
  • Drain the pasta and the broccoli and add to the frying pan
  • Add the sauce and mix in until the pasta is covered
  • Adjust the seasoning and serve

  1. Lovely recipe Tandy. My husband and I love shellfish. Two of my 3 sons, not so much. My parents live on the gulf and my m-i-l in the Puget Sound. Both are generous to bring us seafood when they come to visit.

  2. Yum! Looks hearty and healthy too with all those greens! Shellfish that is fresh to Sydney that others may not know about are Balmain Bugs. They’re a cross between prawns and lobster. Its delicious!

  3. Wow, how big are your crayfish? Unfortunately we don’t have any shell fish here in Montana. I had such a great time lurking around your blog this last month. And my husband can’t get over how great that venison was!

  4. I’m glad you liked this – and great substitution! I am a big proponent of using what is available and easily accessible!

  5. Oh yum! I saw the photo in the linkup last night when I posted at 2am and I couldn’t wait to see the recipe today! This sounds absolutely amazing, we don’t have too much crayfish around here but I absolutely LOVE them. WIll definitely have to try your version of this pasta! 🙂

    1. Crawfish sounds very tasty, being a fresh water shellfish I think that they might be sweeter than crayfish, which is more like your lobster 🙂

  6. I din’t much appreciate shellfish. Give me a sole or a piece of kingklip any day over shellfish.

PS – have you ever made blue cheese icecream?

  7. That is so cool that you go crayfishing! I’ve never done that! The most I’ve done is regular fishing with a fishing pole in our lakes here in KS. So neat to create a dish with fish you caught yourself!

  8. I’m a sucker for any type of pasta pairing with any shellfish – shrimp (or prawns) are my hands down favorite. I live 2 hours from the Jersey coast where clams and crabs are more abundant. I love ’em all! Thanks for sharing this delish recipe 🙂

  9. i’ve always wanted to try crayfish. hm.

…right now there are no shellfish where i live. at least not naturally. i moved from the West coast of Canada to Toronto 8 months ago. not sure why. i sure miss my seafood. i’ve tried East coast oysters but they’re still shipped in. jealous.

Happy SRC reveal from a group C member!!

  10. I’d like to invite you to my Friday Flash Blog, where you can share your best blog entry of the week! The party goes on ALL weekend at And who knows, you may just get featured next week.
