Fizzy Sherbet

I think lockdown is making everyone a little bit more tense that usual and our tempers a bit frayed. I know this was the case for me when I was at the Mall. To make me smile when I got home I made fizzy sherbet. This reminds me of my childhood and always lifts my mood. I think it is the zingy feeling on my tongue.

During the first week of Level 4 lockdown I went to return the vacuum cleaner. But as the line for Pick N Pay was out the door I decided to give it a miss. The following week the queue was just as long and so I went to a smaller branch. But they refused to handle the return as it was not an item they sold. I sent a message to head office asking where else I could do this. Wilma from Somerset Mall called me and said I could come straight to the entrance. And let security know I was coming to see her. The following week I popped the box into a Woolworths trolley and eventually made my way to Pick N Pay. I had stopped at a few stores in the Mall and had one other bag in my trolley.

When I got to Pick N Pay the queue was not that long. As I wanted to do shopping as well, I did not take advantage of skipping the line. After being in the line for five minutes I was told I could not use a Woolworths trolley to maintain social distancing. I had to use a Pick N Pay trolley which made no logical sense to me. But as I was brought another trolley to use, and needed to be in the line, I acquiesced. I had a good moan at the manager on duty who told me it was to ensure no-one skipped the queue. And head office informed me that is was because their trolleys are being sanitized every evening and morning as well as between each customer and trolleys from other stores are not allowed in their stores.

Fizzy Sherbet

You get fizz from the bicarb, sour from the citric acid and flavour, colour and sweet from the jelly powder.
Recipe Category: Sweets
Makes enough for: 1 batch of sherbet

  • 5 mls bicarbonate of soda
  • 5 mls citric acid
  • 15 mls jelly powder


  • Place the bicarbonate of soda, citric acid and jelly powder into a small bowl
  • Stir to combine
  • Dip a lolly or your finger into the sherbet and enjoy the fizz

  1. Wow! I had no idea it was so easy to make fizzy sherbet! Thanks Tandy! I always use my own bags as I don’t think they really sanitise trolleys between use. I’ve never seen them do it and people just return them to the queue.

  2. is jelly powder the same as jello? can i use cherry jello for the jelly powder that you reference? i’m trying to add some ‘pop’ to my Valentine’s Day cupcakes butter cream frosting. thanks in advance for your assistance.

    1. Hi Traci, yes, jelly in South Africa is what Americans refer to as Jello. So the cherry jello powder should work the same 🙂
