One of the advantages of arriving early in any town is you can take a walk through it. and get the measure of the local restaurants. For our first dinner out in Graaff-Reinet we decided to eat at Hello You. We wanted a casual dining experience and food suitable for the extremely hot weather.
In the afternoon we walked through Hello You and did a rum tasting at Afrikanus. They have a small rum tasting room, showcasing their own unique rum, as well as providing cocktails to Hello You. This afternoon visit helped us in our decision to come back for dinner. We made a booking that afternoon for 19h30. Luckily for us, we snagged a great table when we arrived. Our waitress was friendly and helpful which always makes a difference when we eat out.
Wining and dining
I chose to start with the springbok carpaccio (R70) which was served with a tomato salsa, capers, parmesan shavings and rocket. The meat was wonderfully soft. For my main course I had a perfectly roasted pork sirloin (R165). This tasty piece of meat was served with an Afrikanus rum soaked fig sauce on potato mash with veggies. My dad chose the First Sighting Sauvignon Blanc to go with our meal. This is a wine we drink at home, and if you haven’t tried it, I recommend you do.
My mom had a milkshake with her meal and it was so good that we went back the following day to have more. It was super hot and after walking around the town, this seemed the best way to cool down.
