Kronenhoff Guest House, Kirkwood South Africa

If you are planning a visit to Addo Elephant Park then Kronenhoff Guest House is a great place to sleep over for 2 nights.

Kronenhoff Guest House

But, this recommendation comes with caveat. Do not book to stay on a Sunday night! The only place to eat in Kirkwood is at the guest house, and the restaurant is not open on a Sunday night. We chose Kirkwood as our destination as it was only a half hours drive from Addo, where we wanted to spend part of a day during our holiday. There is nothing else to do in the area, which is dedicated to citrus farming.

Room 7

Dave and I stayed in this superior double room that was as luxurious as described. The bed was comfortable and the shower was perfect, with lovely hot water. I appreciated the separate toilet in the bathroom. We had a separate lounge which we did not use, but we could close the door to make our room cooler by using the air-conditioning. The room also had satellite TV and tea and coffee making facilities which were replenished each day, as well as bottles of water which were provided.

Sitting on the patio

My parents were in room 6 and outside of their room on the patio was a lovely large table. We sat outside to have our pre-dinner drinks, play cards and when we had our supper on the Sunday night. Maryke, who was extremely helpful, had arranged for us to make use of the braai facilities. These are not usually available to guests but an exception was made for us. She provided the crockery and cutlery that we would need as well as all the condiments and the wine.

We had two evening meals at Kronenhoff Guest House. The staff were attentive and the food was good. The babotie spring rolls (R40) were really super tasty, and perfectly crunchy. I had lamb curry (R130) for my first main meal which was perfectly mild for me. For our second dinner I had the lamb chops (R145) which were also good. Our wine of choice was the Durbanville Hills Chardonnay 2018. This was the perfect choice for the curry and the weather.

Breakfast was the same choice for the 3 mornings. We started off with fresh fruit, cereals and flavoured yoghurts. We had an option of an English breakfast with a choice of eggs, bacon, tomato, toast, and beef or pork sausage. The other option was an omelette served with toast and a choice of fillings. These were mushroom, ham, onions, tomato, green pepper, bacon and cheese. There was fruit juice on the buffet and we could order coffee or tea.

Overall impressions

The place has a lovely atmosphere which was perfect for a day spent doing as little as possible. The pool was super inviting in the hot weather, but quite slippery to get in and out of, with a sloping ramp into the pool. Dave and I made use of the gym which had not been cleaned very well, and needed TLC, like much of the place. In saying that, the grounds were extremely well maintained and the staff were polite, helpful and friendly.
