Love Marriage, Monica Ali

Love Marriage opening lines: In the Ghorami household sex was never mentioned. If the television was on and a kissing-with-tongues scene threatened the chaste and cardamom-scented home, it was swiftly terminated by a flick of the black box.

My blurb:

Yasmin Ghorani is fulfilling her father’s dreams and becoming a Doctor. She has also stepped away from her culture and is marrying a fellow Doctor. He is not Muslim, but to Yasmin this is not an issue at all. But as she navigates the meeting of her parents with her future mother-in-law, and her younger brother’s inability to settle down, Yasmin has a lot of questions for her own true self. By confronting them, and the history behind her parents’ marriage, her life starts to unravel. Can she put it back together and find her own love marriage?

Love Marriage

Yasmin Ghorami has a lot to be grateful for: a loving family, a fledgling career in medicine, and a charming, handsome fiancée, fellow doctor Joe Sangster.

But as the wedding day draws closer and Yasmin’s parents get to know Joe’s firebrand feminist mother, both families must confront the unravelling of long-held secrets, lies and betrayals.

As Yasmin dismantles her own assumptions about the people she holds most dear, she’s also forced to ask herself what she really wants in a relationship and what a ‘love marriage’ actually means.

Love Marriage is a story about who we are and how we love in today’s Britain – with all the complications and contradictions of life, desire, marriage and family. What starts as a captivating social comedy develops into a heart-breaking and gripping story of two cultures, two families and two people trying to understand one another.

My verdict:

This is the second novel I have read which deals with covert incest. This emotional form of incest is an eye opener and goes a long way to explain certain behaviour patterns. It is dealt with in the book in a way that makes it understandable. Even though this is not the core story of the novel, it is an integral part of it. A wonderful read from the acclaimed author of Brick Lane. Listen to the amazing podcast with Monica Ali here.
