Magica Roma, Pinelands, Cape Town

If you are looking for an authentic Italian restaurant, look no further than Magica Roma. Situated in Pinelands, there is limited parking close by. But the walk from your car will be worth it.

Magica Roma

Last November we had to collect the kids from the airport. Their flight was due to land just before 22h00 and I decided a meal out beforehand would be perfect. I was already in Cape Town so Dave drove through and met me. We invited Eric and Bev to come along so we could catch up after our overseas trip. Magica Roma was ideally situated for our trip to the airport. It offers proper Italian food, in a setting much like you would find in Italy. The bathroom is through the kitchen and the tables are so close together you are part of each others’ conversations. The lighting is not bright and the acoustics are not great. But, the meals we have had there have always been excellent.

Our Starters
To start

Had we ordered wine I would have gone for the Nero D’avola which is one of our favourite red wines from Sicily. However, Dave was not well and we all decided to stick to water. The last time we were there starters were ordered for the table. The peperoni in bagna cauda (R55) looked so good so I ordered that for my starter. Dave had the game carpaccio (R85), Eric the shrimp cocktail (R79) and Bev ordered insalata della casa (R85) which we all picked on.

Our Meal
Our meal

The photographs in no way do justice to the meal. The lighting is not conducive to good photography so you will have to rely on me telling you it was all tasty. Dave had spaghetti vongole (R120) and Eric and I chose the osso bucco which was on special that evening. Bev had the sole (SQ) and all the non pasta meals were served with seasonal vegetables. We shared the Italian cassata with amaretto (R72) for dessert and one day I shall have to make this at home.

Service and more

The service is great, with the owners making sure each table is happy, and being attended to. Our meal, including gratuity came to R1428.

  1. It looks much more Italian than do Italian restaurants in the US where we’ve had over 100 years of Italian-American cuisine. Nothing wrong with it just different.
