Granadillas and passion fruit came from the same genus, but are different. I didn’t think that granadillas were so unique to South Africa, until I posted my recipe for granadilla ice lollies. As granadillas are sweeter, they are more palatable for children. But I wanted something tart to go with my chocolate dessert, and passion fruit seemed like the best option. As I can get both fruits here, I used the juice to make my passion fruit ice cream.
In 2004 I bought a house with a friend, as an investment. Dave and I were the first tenants and since then we have had ups and downs. We had people abscond in the middle of the night, taking the carpets with them. And except for 2 lots of occupiers, we have lost money when the deposit has been used against the last months’ rent. Because of that, we started asking for 2 months’ deposit. The next two tenants could manage this with ease, as we allowed for the second month to be paid off. Our last tenant turned into a squatter, not having paid his second month deposit. He was great when he moved in, and we had done a lot of work on the house before he took occupation. We had a month in-between tenants to do what was necessary, but the builder took us for a ride.

Due to the State of Disaster, we were unable to evict him, and he finally moved out of his own accord at the end of last year. January was spent securing a new tenant and fixing up the mess left by the previous person who worked on the house. Once again, a fair portion has been spent on the house. But on the upside, we have an amazing investment that has not cost us a cent in a long time. And during lockdown we were able to take money out of the property. This helped immensely as my work was shut for 5 weeks. At the moment, the ups far outweigh the downs. All I can hope now is that our new tenant proves to be one of the good ones. Would you consider an investment property? And if you have one, is it worth it?
