Powell House, Swellendam South Africa

When we pulled into the parking lot at Powell House, Dave was not sure they were open. Ours was the only car there but as we ventured up the stairs we could see lights on. We were the first table to arrive for the night, but given that it was a Monday night in a tourist town, I was not surprised.

Powell House

The restaurant is owned and run by Alan and Cheryl Caw. Alan was born in Glasgow, Scotland and his rich Scottish accent was what welcomed us as we walked in. The menu is South African inspired and the wine list features many local wineries. We chose a bottle of My Best Friend as we liked the name!

Our meal

The reason we normally choose to self cater when away is that the menu choices start becoming repetitive. Knowing this was our last meal, and the limited menu choices made it easier to decide what to enjoy. I had the venison carpaccio (R95), which is one of Dave’s favourite starters. But he decided to go for the grilled garlic mussels (R70) reminding me of meals enjoyed in Brittany. For our main course I chose the Franschhoek salmon trout fillet (R170) which was pan fried and served with potatoes and vegetables. Dave had traditional Malay chicken curry (R145) served with rice and sambals. Unlike an Indian curry which is hot, Malay curries are mild and fragrant.

Overall impressions

We had a lovely evening out and a pleasant meal and the service was perfect. We chose not to have dessert as the two courses were enough for us.
