Dave and I have a very unique home, full of 45 degree angles. The open plan design is not to everyone’s taste. Some people prefer rooms that are closed off from one another. But we like to have the feeling of everything being connected. In saying that, the scullery is blocked off from the kitchen which means I don’t have to put dishes away when we have guests. And the guest bedrooms are completely apart from the living areas. There is a huge feeling of space as the dining room and pub are double volume, and our bedroom, study and gym have no interior walls. It makes the house seem much larger than it really is. No matter what each individual’s preference is, there is usually a positive comment when someone new comes to our house.

I am busy getting quotes for blinds and curtains and it has been interesting seeing people’s reactions. The first person to come and measure up said not one word about the house. And when I told her I wanted curtains in the bedroom she told me I was wrong. She prefers a combination of blinds and curtains. And as that what she has, it is what I should choose. These two factors put me off her straight away. And whereas her quote is less than the second person who came to measure up, I might go for the more expensive option. Only because there was a comment about how airy the house felt. And how much space there was. And also because she did not tell me what I should do in the bedroom, but rather left it up to me to tell her what I wanted.

This versatile dressing will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks
Recipe Category: Salad Dressing
All Rights Reserved: Adapted from Ottolenghi Flavour page 276

Ingredients

  • 30 g tahini, stir well before weighing out
  • 15 mls soy sauce
  • 11.25 mls mirin
  • 11.25 mls apple cider vinegar

Method

  • Place the tahini, soy, mirin and vinegar into a small mixing bowl
  • Whisk well to combine and use as needed
  • Store in a sterilized glass jar if you have left overs

Notes

See this post on how I sterilize my glass jars. According to Yotam, you can use maple syrup instead of mirin. I substituted apple cider vinegar for rice vinegar.

  1. Your dressing looks like a very interesting and delicious combination of flavours Tandy, somewhat of a fusion of cultures really. I’ll give it a try , it will be a nice change with lots dishes and perhaps just with traybakes as well. Your home sounds lovely and quite grand.

  2. Hehe saying to your potential customer that their vision / choice is a completely wrong one is a peculiar way to persuade!
Anyway, huge tahini fan here! So many options to use (Have you tried tahini over vanilla or chocolate ice cream?) And this dressing is delightful – going to try the addition of soy sauce, too.

  3. That’s a good alternative to the old standby of vinaigrette dressing for salad. I’ll have to remember it.

  4. I’m sure I would love the openness of your home, sometimes I need a little closed off area though to get away from the kids and chaos! What a great dipping sauce, so versatile. I enjoy recipes that allow me to use it on different foods like potatoes or rice.

I would ♥ to hear from you (comments will be visible when I reply)
