The Greyhound, Wootton, England

Our last meal out in England was at The Greyhound, a 17th Century Cotswold Stone pub. This is a real treasure of a find, with antique decor and an olde worlde feel. Alfred White, the founder of Whites of Appleton, lived and worked there from 1850 to 1876.

The Greyhound

The menu, which changes often, is styled as British gastro pub dishes. Expect daily drinks options such as Gin Ting Passionfruit Gin, Sloemotion’s Hedgerow Blackberry and Apple Gin or Cotswold No.1 Wildflower Gin all served with a different style tonic and individual garnishes. Draught beer and cider on tap, and a really good wine list. Meals ordered around the table included the Korean fried broccoli (£6.95); braised shoulder of lamb (£21.95) and vegan nachos (£11.95). Dave and I went for the deep fried cod in beer batter (£15.95) which was served with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce. Only when my meal arrived at the table did my aunt ask why I had not asked for fresh peas. In fact, it never occurred to me, but next time …..

Lunch time

Our meal was absolutely fantastic and the perfect ending to what had been a stunning family and friends holiday. The service was good and if we ever find ourselves back in Abingdon we will go the The Greyhound again. Mostly because I want to try the British cheeses they have on offer. I had an Aspalls draught Suffolk cider (£4.55) with my meal, the boys had beer, Evie had a glass of the pinot grigio rosato (£5.5) and Anne had Kleine Zalze chenin blanc (£5.80). Contact them on +44 186 586 2110 (bookings essential).
