The Happiness Workout, Noa Belling

I am a little bit of a Podcast addict, and listen to a wide variety of topics on a daily basis. In January I listened to Noa talk about The Happiness Workout and I knew we were kindred spirits. My thesis for my Clinical Psychology Masters would have been on using words to change our outlook. And Noa spoke about themes around that. I resonated when she said, just place your hand on your heart, close your eyes and breathe. Despite driving, I was tempted to do just that. But placing my hand on my heart was good enough. We all need to slow our breathing, and take a moment.

The Happiness Workout

What if you could practice, and access, happiness at any time?

When were you last truly happy? How did ‘happy’ feel? Some people find that being happy is a natural state of being, but for others it’s a constant struggle to find contentment with all of life’s stresses and upheavals.

Bestselling author and psychologist Noa Belling has designed a variety of ‘happiness workouts’ to help you do just that. Based on scientific studies of biochemistry and neuroscience, this book teaches you how to cultivate happiness by honing certain physical skills such as strength, flexibility, fluidity, grounding and warm-heartedness. Deeply rooted within your body, these skills foster resilience, confidence and creativity to help you meet life’s challenges skillfully.

A happiness workout is made up of everyday quick practices, complemented by physical exercise programs that are designed to be accessible no matter your age or level of fitness. Try it out and feel how it optimises your brain function and reliably turns things around!

Did I do it all?

Nope, I did not do all the exercises in the book. I practice gratitude every day and I am a happy person. Personally, I believe exercise is an integral part of good wellbeing, and so I focussed on The 7 Illustrated Workout Guides And Support For Muscle Recovery. I did the following workouts a few times each, and have incorporated some of the exercises into my normal routines.

  • Grounding Workout With Short Meditation
  • Bedtime Workout For Unwinding Towards Peaceful Sleep
  • Strength Workout
  • Workout For Boosting Creativity And Zest For Life
  • Workout For Strengthening Your Reach and Perseverance
  • Heart-opening Workout
  • A few Stretches And Muscle-recovery Suggestions
My verdict:

No matter which stage of happiness you find yourself in, this is a book I would love everyone to read. Even if like me, you only take out the bits you need. Noa studied Somatic psychology and she has taught skills in mindfulness as well as running a private psychotherapy practice.
