The Old Inn
Dave and I had planned on stopping overnight in Gairloch. We did not make a booking beforehand as we did not think there would be a problem finding somewhere to stay. It was mid-October in the North-West Highlands of Scotland. And who knew it would be so busy? We were told at The Old Inn that we were lucky she could offer us a choice of two rooms, and for more than one night. We chose room 5 of this establishment which has offered accommodation since the day they opened in the 17th Century!
The room has twin beds pushed together and are comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep. The walls are very thin, allowing sounds from other rooms to creep in. The blackout blind ensured that no light disturbed my sleep and I slept in until 7am. We started our morning with a cup of complementary coffee. The shower has very low pressure and there are no hooks in the bathroom to hang up anything. Basic amenities are provided which means less unpacking and packing for me.
We chose to stay in the hotel so that we could dine in. Our whisky’s of choice for the night were Ardmore Legacy and Tomatin. Dave started with The Old Inn seafood chowder and I had a pot of spinners. I could not taste the garlic in them, but let me tell you, they were garlic heavy! Dave had a few which was a good thing. They are like baby langoustines, with fat bellies and fiddly to eat. But really delicious. For our main course we had the game pie with venison supplied by local estates, and the fish pie.
Breakfast is quite a feast. There is a full buffet of yoghurt, fruit, cereals, bread, cold meat, cheese and jams as well as a choice of fresh juices and teas. Coffee is brought to the table and for our hot meal we go for the full Scottish breakfast with a poached egg.
The staff are very pleasant and always available. I would recommend that you make a booking if you are in the area. Part of the North Coast 500 route, you can stop here to do some whale watching or rare sea bird sightings.
