Curried Mince

This mild curried mince is traditionally served with vetkoek in South Africa
Author: an original recipe from Lavender and Lime


  • 30 mls olive oil
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to season
  • 2 garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 2.5 cm fresh root ginger peeled and finely chopped
  • 7.5 mls garam masala
  • 500 g minced beef
  • 2 large ripe tomatoes grated, skins discarded


  • Heat the oil in a large frying pan and then sauté the onion until soft
  • Season and add the garlic, ginger and masala
  • Cook until you can smell the spices
  • Brown the beef in batches
  • Seaon generously and add the tomatoes
  • Reduce the temperature and leave to simmer until the liquid has evaporated
