Dave and I wanted to eat out at a local restaurant when we were in Maratea last year. After reading the menu at La Perla, we decided that this would be our meal out.

La Perla
Overlooking Piazza Buraglia, La Perla offers several dining areas and their speciality is acqua pazza. This translates to crazy water and is a way of cooking fish, unique to the South of Italy. With the sloped floor and tables set close together you get the feeling of being in someone’s large dining room, rather than a restaurant. As with all restaurants in Italy, the service is provided by permanent wait staff who have made this their career. Our waitress is friendly, and speaks English fairly well, enough to ensure that she gets our order correct.
To start
We start off by ordering vino della cassa. We choose the red wine, and only half a carafe. Our starter is the gran misto Maratea (€15.00) which is amazing. At first we are brought a plate with 4 items, gamberi, pesce spado affumicato, salmone morinato and seppie e carciofi. There was only one prawn on the plate but as it is a starter meant for one, we did not mind. We were sharing the starter which was a good thing. The smoked fish was swordfish and I cannot wait to replicate this at home. No sooner had we cleared the plate than a bowl of polipetti moscardini arrived at the table. These baby octopi were in the most amazing tomato sauce. This was followed by alici e peperoni. The simple anchovy dish was packed full of flavour.
The rest of our meal
I was really glad that we had only ordered a primi piatti course as I wanted to save space for dessert. I chose the rascatielli con ragù di salsiccia (€9.00) and Dave had the scralatielle vongole e friarielli (€12.00). We both chose local pasta shapes and our meals were excellent. I had wanted to have tiramisu (€5.00) for dessert but sadly they had none left by the time we had finished our meal. The total bill, including gratuity came to €46.00.

What a lovely meal and La Perla looks to be a fantastic find. All of the dishes look delicious, but the the gran misto Maratea does look amazing.
That was the most memorable starter we have had anywhere 🙂
Thank you, Tandy. You had me salivating there….I,love Italy and Italian food. Visited twice; especially enjoyed the Lake Garda area. Bellisimo! xx

What an elegant dining experience? But what….they ran out of tiramisu? How does that happen?
It used to happen to us all the time in the restaurant. We never seemed to have enough made 🙂
Wow that sounds like a wonderful meal Tandy and that you were very impressed! 😀
