On our way to Quiet Mountain my parents, sister and I stopped for lunch. Kerry had chosen RocoMamas as the place she wanted to go and we went to their branch in Rivonia. This well run franchise and concept excited me enough to share with Dave and the kids. The kids are now adults and James was quite surprised that I wanted to go there for supper.
RocoMamas
In 2012 the first RocoMamas opened their door next to a well-known burger franchise. This American burger joint concept store was so successful that a second site was opened soon after that. Within 3 years a leading brand in the restaurant game bought them out, leaving the original owner as CEO. With 58 locations to choose from you should be able to find one close to you.
The concept
The idea is that you get to choose what type of burger you eat. First off, the choice is between beef, chicken or vegetarian. The standard beef patty weighs in at 150g or you can double up to 2 x 100g patties with double the cheese. Your Smash Burger will come with tomato, red onion and RocoMayo plus any number of toppings. You get to customise your burger from a choice of 26 extras. You tick off what you want on the order sheet and add your name to the bottom. This should mean that your order gets to you correctly assembled with all the bits you want, and don’t want. Both Dave and I crossed out the onions but somehow this was missed on Dave’s order.
To start and to drink
We decide that starters are in order and choose 8 Old Skool BBQ Wings with a blue cheese dip (R62). The wings were amazing but I was not impressed with the dip. James and Dave love anything spicy and so they added 6 Chilli Cheese Bombs with a mofo mayo (R37) to go with the wings. Dave and James have Smash Brew to drink and I opt for the Alpha Cider. Next time I will have a beer. Carli and James decided to have milkshakes (R37) for dessert. They went for lemon meringue and Belgium chocolate.
The Smash
For our RocoMamas burgers James has The Alfie (R65) which is one of their limited edition choices. James was convinced to add extra cheese sauce (R10) to his burger which came standard with cheddar, Parmesan, mac ‘n’ cheese and Italian relish. He decided that was one cheese too many for him. Carli has the Rockstar (R67) which is a standard Smash with Emmental and caramelised red onions. Dave went with the standard Smash (R47) and added bacon, Emmental, jalapeno and rocket (R38). When I went with my dad he had the spicy coleslaw and so I added that to my choice, together with Emmental and sweet pickles (R24). That was a tad too spicy for me so I will know for future to try something else. To our order we added a large portion of shoestring fries (R40) for the table.
Overall impressions
I much preferred the meal that I had in Rivonia but both were very good. I will most certainly go back the next time I need a burger fix. Also a great place to meet up for meals with people who are fussy as you really have so many choices. There is a great atmosphere and I was reminded of Big Mouth Burgers where Kerry and I worked in the 1990’s. Our bill came to R730 including the gratuity.

This is totally my kinda restaurant, American burger joint, haha. Although I’m not too sure on the toppings you chose, no way for me =)
That is what makes it so nice – you can choose your own and not have to go with standard varieties 🙂
