When it came to choosing where to eat in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne I decided upon The Broad Chare. Mostly for the name, and also because the menu looked perfect. They offer a traditional pub downstairs with plenty of ales on tap.

There is generous seating in the bar and snug so you can enjoy snacks while you have a drink or two. If you are looking for a quieter place to eat then head upstairs to the dining room. Mark, David and I sat down in the bar to have a drink before our meal. Dave had a Goose Honkers Ale, I had a Dog Dancer Cider and Mark had a Heidi Weisser.

The food is made fresh to order and the emphasis is on old-fashioned British meals which is another draw card in my opinion. You can order bar snacks to start which is exactly what we did. Mark had the Scotch egg (£3.95), Dave went for the ¼ pint Atlantic prawns (£3.70) and I had deep-fried monkfish cheeks (£3.95). By this time we were finished our drinks and as I so enjoyed Mark’s beer I decided on that for my second round. It was really one of the nicest Weiss beers I have tried.

For our main courses Dave went with the daily special which was old-fashioned steak and kidney pudding (£12.50). Mark and I both went for the ground rump burger with cheddar and pickles (£11.00).

The service was great and the setting is perfect for a casual get-together. Mark had never even heard of the place but he is going to go back with friends. You can order sharing meals which is a wonderful way to eat as a group.
