Onse Rus Guest House, Prince Albert

Sometimes, life has a way of offering up lemonade! When booking to stay in Prince Albert I chose a place that seemed most suitable for our needs. No sooner had I done the booking than the owner called and told me to cancel both rooms as she had taken a telephonic booking for one person and was going to honour it. And that is how we ended up staying at Onse Rus.

The Gardens

Onse Rus

Two days before our arrival Leonard contacted me suggesting he make a booking for our meal on the Friday night. He sent through two menus and Dave and I took a look and made a decision. This thoughtful message was a great indication of the small attention to detail one can find at Onse Rus. We arrived to a warm welcome and were shown to our rooms. My parents had a lovely room with a small private courtyard, and Dave and I were in the family room. A letter was left for us in our room highlighting certain factors to take into consideration. One of them is that limited wifi is only available in the pool area and lounge. And that in the lounge we would find complimentary port to end off our evening.

A relaxing stay

After a long day all I did was a quick unpack and then went to sit at the pool. The gardens are amazing with all sorts of flowers and herbs and the birds loved the feeders and water baths. Had we arrived earlier in the day I could easily have spent the entire afternoon doing nothing but read and relax. But because my parents flight had been delayed we had arrived late afternoon. After a short time at the pool, we got ready for dinner and then met in the small courtyard for drinks. After dinner we sat in the lounge, sipping our port and winding down. We then headed for bed, meeting the next morning for breakfast.

Room 5 Onse Rus

Our room

Dave and I were in Room 5, with a small kitchenette, bathroom and two bedrooms. We used the one as a dressing room and slept in the other. The room has access directly from the street, as well as from the garden. Our bed was extremely comfortable which did not make up for the Church bells that rang every 15 minutes. The shower was great and we were provided with complimentary shampoo, shower gel and soap. There was also hand wash and body lotion as well as sanitiser and mosquito spray. We did not make use of the mini bar but I enjoyed tea the afternoon we arrived; and Dave and I had coffee in the morning before going for breakfast. The fudge in our room also went down a treat.

Breakfast

We were seated outside, on the patio facing the street for what I considered an excellent breakfast. Whereas Leonard handles front of house, it is his partner Neil, who is in charge of the kitchen. Our breakfast started with Gay’s dairy yoghurt, topped with fresh fruit and homemade muesli on the side. This was followed by croissants served with a variety of home made jams and marmalade. The hot meal was an omelette with fillings of our choice.
