The Hickory Shack, Grabouw South Africa

The concept of the American smokehouse has arrived locally at The Hickory Shack. Dave and I first went for lunch mid-week and we were both surprised at how full they were. We have learnt from that meal that we need to make a booking. Our second visit was with friends, and then a few months ago we went for a third time.

Turning off the N2 between Grabouw and Houw Hoek you drive down a dirt road to an unnasuming building. With tables indoors and al fresco I would suggest getting a table outside in summer. The weather is usually sweltering in this area during these months. Breakfast is served until noon and they also cater for children. There is a playpark for them so you can linger over your meal.

To Eat and Drink

Be prepared to share! The portions are extremely generous and for 4 people I would only select 3 meat dishes. As the beef brisket (R125) is smoked every day Dave and I decided to order this. It certainly lives up to the claim of being the pride of any smokehouse. For our second dish we chose a portion of belly ribs (R125). We added a side order of chips to our meal (R25) and this was more than enough food for the two of us. The meals are served with BBQ sauce, chipotle mayo and a seriously hot chilli sauce. Washed down with Hick’s Ginger Beer (R25) and a Homemade Lemon Cordial (R25) our lunch was perfect.

Service and more

Each time we have been, the service has been great. But be prepared to wait for your meal as everything is prepared to order. You can pop along to the smokehouse while waiting for your meal. My tip is to arrive there hungry!

  1. It sounds a great place, Tandy. Our grown ‘lads’ would enjoy all that tasty meat..(except our eldest: a vegetarian.) Now we’re older, we can’t eat large meals so would probably have to share! Enjoy while you can! Best wishes. x

  2. Fun post Tandy! We just got back from the Old South and oh the BBQ smokehouse food! So yummy!!!!! We drove through the night home as it’s a 24 drive from Florida to New York and good BBQ kept our spirits up!

I would ♥ to hear from you (comments will be visible when I reply)
