Benguela Brasserie, Swartvlei

One place Dave and I will be sure to visit next time we are in Sedgefield will be Benguela Brasserie. It will make a change for Marguerite and the setting is so peaceful. Dave and I stayed at the Lodge in April and so we only had a short walk to the restaurant.

We chose the Shiraz 2012 to enjoy with dinner which was served slightly chilled and was perfect. A selection of bread was brought to the table and knowing how good their homemade loaves are, I could not resist a slice. I chose the seed bread and slathered it in butter. Dave had the ciabatta with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar mix. An amuse bouche of an Asian prawn with a garlic aïoli made the perfect precursor to our meal.

I had the Asian calamari to start and Dave chose the gnocchi. Both starters were perfect and just the right size portion.

For mains I had the smoked pork neck and Dave had the chicken ballotine. Every mouthful of my meal was exquisite and the ballotine was excellent from what I tasted. Side dishes are R35 extra and we ordered the freshly prepared vegetables with Parmesan to accompany our meal.

Despite having eaten enough I managed to squeeze in dessert. The baked cheesecake was delicious and the perfect end to my meal. Dinner is priced on a 2 course (R295) or 3 course (R345) option.

Breakfast is available from 8am until 11am and we made the most of lying in before going to eat. We started off with a cup of coffee (most welcome), which was served with biscotti. We both chose the eggs Benedict (R90) for our meal. I loved that the dish was placed under the grill just before serving. The yolks were perfectly runny, however, the vinegar was a tad too prominent in the taste department. This was enough of a breakfast for us, knowing we would be having an early lunch.

If you chose not to dine at the Brasserie you can have room service (available from 12 – 9pm).
