I have to admit that I do not watch Ultimate Braai Masters. But, having watched a snippet from the show with Weskus Annas I might start watching the next series. Hosted by Justin Bonello this show has many South Africans gripped by the scenery and challenges. Here John Grundlingh, one half of the winning team, has answered some questions for my readers.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
Kelly Slater. 11 x World Surfing Champion. Just his attitude to life and persistence and drive to be the best, no matter what. He really” lives life to the fullest” and that is my motto to life.
What started you on the path of cooking?
I was always the one that cooked with my mom at night and I still have her little black book full of recipes before she passed away when I was still young. She is definitively smiling now after we won Braai Master.
Which three ingredients could you not live without?
Coriander, Cumin and chillies!
Which of your kitchen tools would you take with you anywhere and everywhere?
My Chef Knife!
Which meal is your all time favourite?
My mom’s spinach lasagne.
Which restaurant would you visit over and over again?
Strandloper in Langebaan. Open air seafood restaurant with most stunning views and awesome seafood fresh out of the ocean!
If you could only have one recipe book, which one would it be?
Road Tripping with Justin Bonello. Written by Helena Lombardt who always travels with us. Great read and recipes!
If you could work alongside one chef for a day who would that be?
Jamie Oliver
Which ingredient will you not eat or cook with?
I actually try and eat everything and always try to make it taste better. So it’s more of a challenge for me to show people that it is actually eatable. 🙂
What is on top of your bucket list?
To go to the World Food Championships in Florida! So that one will be ticked off later this year!!! Then a surf, wine and food road trip through Morocco will be next on my list.
What is your food philosophy?
Cook from your heart and and it will give you joy in eating! Food is there for everyone to enjoy and to bring all together. Try and stick to healthy foods for a healthy life.
Any parting words for the readers?
If you at first don’t succeed, then braai, braai and braai again!
