Nemesis opening lines: Tommy Stojack. The guy’s name is everywhere, a hushed referral at an ammo trade stall, a proper noun rising above the buzz at the Green Beret Foundation booth, a fleck of sea-foam shot from the swirls and eddies of the churning crowd on the convention floor.
My blurb:
Evan is in a world of pain. He believes Tommy has betrayed him, and all that he stands for and believes in. His mission is to kill Tommy, but when he arrives at Tommy’s workshop, he gets attacked. Now he has no choice but to make sure he gets the job done. But all is not as it seems, and Tommy is the one under attack. No worse enemy, no greater friend! This describes everything you need to know about Evan and Tommy. Will this end the way Evan had planned? Or will he concede and allow Tommy to live?
Nemesis
Evan Smoak is a lone wolf operator. It goes with the territory for a former offthe- books government assassin. He certainly can’t afford to go up against one of the few people he likes and trusts in this world. But Tommy Stojack, a gifted armorer and gunsmith whom Evan relies on, has crossed a line. And when Evan confronts him, instead of clearing up a deadly disagreement, he comes under attack. Now it’s war.Tommy’s got problems of his own though. He promised a dying comrade that he’d be there for the man’s son and now the boy’s in a world of trouble. The very last thing Tommy needs is Evan showing up with vengeance on his mind. The scary thing? Evan isn’t even the most dangerous threat to arrive on the scene …
My verdict:
Evan’s life is finally getting ‘real’. And it is interesting to read the progression of a true loner, to a man who has connections. In Nemesis, Gregg Hurwitz tells us how Evan and Tommy meet, and the story is the perfect backdrop to so many facts we know about their lives. Another great read in the Orphan X installments.
