My friends’ father has been in the printing industry his entire adult life. The past ten years have been extremely challenging as more things become digital. It is not only his industry that has been affected, but the paper industry itself. A friend of mine grew up on a paper farm. His parents grew pine trees and each tree had to grow for 30 years before being pulped. In the 1990’s this was shortened to 20 years to cope with the increase in demand for printed material. But now, we consider our environmental responsibility and less is printed. And whereas thinking of inhouse magazines that are now digital does not even scratch the surface of the issue. If only half of our population has a bank account that would mean 30 million statements were printed each month. Plus all the companies that had their bank statements printed.

Now the banks send everything out electronically, so less paper is needed. The farms grow fewer trees for pulping, and may indeed turn to farming pine trees for wood, which uses different pruning methods. With less paper being needed, and produced, less is available for the traditional printers. And I can see how the price has gone up over the past 5 years. So, my friends’ father has a trifold problem. There is less and less being printed. There are paper supply issues. And his company turnover is not worth keeping the doors open in reality. But there is still enough of a demand that he has work. Just not work that is really profitable. So his biggest question is does he keep the business going for the customers he has had for decades? Or does he close his doors, adding to the increasing unemployment issues?

It is not viable to run a company that is not making a profit. Unfortunately, businesses have to move with the changing times. In SA, of course, the economy is shrinking for many reasons.
All over there are companies closing. It is a sign of the times sadly.
Yes I hadn’t given any thought to the people who grew the trees for paper. How difficult for them. Love a roasted nut tho!
Neither had I until I heard about the paper shortage 🙂
Such a good snack and healthy too.
And my new all time favourite 🙂
