The Ladies’ Midnight Swimming Club opening lines: Mid-May and to Elizabeth, the night felt almost balmy. The cove was just half a mile along the beach.
My blurb:
Elizabeth never knew how shackled she was until her husband died, leaving her in debt. All along she had thought they were living the lifestyle a country Doctor should have. But unbeknown to her, Eric had squandered all of his cash, and borrowed more to cover his gambling debts. His death brings with it more than just that, it brings with it the chance to start again. And to heal old wounds. Her best friend Jo is going to help her navigate a new path, all while battling her own problems.
The Ladies’ Midnight Swimming Club
When Elizabeth’s husband dies, leaving her with crippling debt, the only person she can turn to is her friend, Jo. Soon Jo has called in her daughter, Lucy, to help save Elizabeth from bankruptcy. Leaving her old life behind, Lucy is determined to make the most of her fresh start.
As life slowly begins to return to normal, these three women, thrown together by circumstance, become fast friends. But then Jo’s world is turned upside down when she receives some shocking news.
In search of solace, Jo and Elizabeth find themselves enjoying midnight dips in the freezing Irish Sea. Here they can laugh, cry and wash away all their fears. As well as conjure a fundraising plan for the local hospice that will bring the whole community together…
My verdict:
Faith Hogan delves into the horrors Irish women faced if they fell pregnant out of wedlock in this heartwarming novel. A story about life and living and hope and a read I can recommend if you need something uplifting and light.
