Yellow House restaurant is situated on a working almond and citrus farm in Prince Albert, South Africa.
Dave and I chose Yellow House for dinner the night we stayed at Prince Albert because their menu is small. With just 3 starters and mains to choose from and 5 desserts, the thought was that the food would be freshly prepared. And it was!
My meal at Yellow House
After an amuse bouche of brie and quince paste, I started with the smoorsnoek samoosa (R60). The starter was a small portion in my opinion, but the pastry was crisp which is all important. Smoorsnoek is a traditional Cape Malay dish and the 2 samoosas were served with an apricot relish. My dad had the tongue in mustard sauce (R80), which was so tender and extremely tasty. For my main course I had the fillet of beef (R180) which was cooked slightly rarer than what I had ordered it. Nonetheless, it was tender and the red onion marmalade the perfect accompaniment for the meal. The main courses were all very generous portions.
Dessert and drinks
I was intrigued by the smoked chocolate fondant with pink peppercorns (R70) so ordered that for my dessert. Firstly, the fondant was a slice of set chocolate mousse, rather than a warm fondant. And for some reason there were garlic flowers used as garnish. I did not realize what they were until I took my first bite, and it ruined my palate for what should have been an amazing flavour combination, could I have tasted the smoked chocolate. We enjoyed a bottle of Fernskloof Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2018 with our meal. They are not licensed so it is recommended that you take your own wine with you.
Overall impressions
Petro certainly knows her way around the kitchen and I would go there again. Her husband handles front of house and is quite a character, making for some interesting conversation. Contact them on +27 82 480 3725 to make your reservation.

I too like restaurants with short menus
