September 2024 Showcasing In My Kitchen

September 2024 was an amazingly busy month. We had friends stay with us for two nights at the beginning of the month. I took them to Lourensford Wine Estate for coffee and a bit of shopping. Sadly the car museum was closed so Dave and I will have to go back. We also went to Morgenster for an olive oil tasting. Dave, Eric, Bev and I headed inland for a sightseeing tour that included the Koue Bokkeveld (cold buck field) and the Tankwa Karoo. We spent two nights in Clanwilliam, an area known for its wildflowers. The last evening was spent in Paternoster which is on the West Coast. Braai day (Heritage Day) came and went and we had friends over for dinner on the last Saturday of the month.

Showcasing In My Kitchen

I had a fairly even split between sweet and savoury dishes this month. I made torta di cioccolato which was amazingly rich. An orange mug cake was whipped up and devoured all within ten minutes. And I made a caramel toast ice cream. I baked a loaf of sweetcorn bread to go with omelette Arnold Bennett that we enjoyed with my parents when they came to visit. Comfort food in the form of a loaded macaroni cheese was enjoyed when the weather was cool and to keep the carbs going, I made tartiflette.

One new thing in my kitchen in September 2024

If I look back on the last 15 years of blogging, I seem to go through a lot of kitchen timers! I dropped one of them a while back, and this year I finally had enough of trying to make it do what I wanted it to do. I bought this timer, thinking Dave would find it easy to use. The time is set by rotating the dial, and the start/stop function is on the touch screen. I like how hefty it is, and all I need now is a decent magnet in my kitchen to adhere it to.

  1. Love the snazzy timer – I just use my phone which is why it’s always covered in sticky finger marks! Everything looks so delish especially that caramel toast ice cream! Yum!

    1. I use my phone for some things, but I find a kitchen timer useful when I am doing several recipes at once, which is most weekends 😉

  2. Our stoves and micowave ovens have all come equipped with timers for many years now, so we no longer have stand-alone devices. It’s great when you replace one that’s not working.
Have a sweet New Year… mae

  3. You had a really delicious month, Tandy. I want to try that chocolate cake. Luckily, my kitchen timer lasts…I think the one I am using now is the 2nd one in 20 years.

  4. Now, that’s what I call comfort food. The caramel toast ice cream looks the business, but I can never resist macaroni cheese.

  5. Interesting with kitchen timers, I just use my microwave as a timer most times, but I should invest in one. Cooking shows have a few of them working at the same time. Your whole region sounds so interesting Tandy. I would love to travel to around Capetown, but it all sounds rather difficult at the moment. I guess the safest way to do it would be to take a tour. I loved all your recipes when I saw them on your blog. You are always so busy.

  6. It seems like we all almost all agree about the life span of a kitchen timer. I don’t use one anymore because I have an Alexa in my kitchen and I tell her – “Alexa” time this for 30 minutes and boom she calls me in 30 minutes!! You did some delicious looking baking this month. Happy New Year Tandy!!

I would ♥ to hear from you (comments will be visible when I reply)
