Let’s talk about oranges
Despite this sweet citrus fruit originating from China, most of the world’s oranges are grown in Brazil. This came as quite a surprise to me as my mind tends towards Spain and Italy when it comes to oranges. However, it was only when the Moors came to the Iberian Peninsula that oranges first came to Spain. And the sweet orange did not appear in Sicily until the late 1400’s. Only then was it considered an edible fruit, but one that was grown by wealthy people in their orangeries. Oranges do not ripen further once picked, and there are four types, the common orange, blood oranges, navel, and acidless. Another interesting fact is that oranges are a hybrid. They were created from a non-pure mandarin orange, and a hybrid pomelo. Further hybrids resulted in the grapefruit, which is very intriguing.
Why I made an orange mug cake
At the beginning of December I decided to go through my saved recipes and make each and every one. I have probably achieved 90% of my task to date. I am doing the recipes in order, and only set them aside for future effort if I cannot find an ingredient straight away. Part of my process was to get through the recipe books I had been sent to review. One of these was Happiness In A Mug Cake and I loved the mint chocolate mug cake. So much so that I wanted another one the next day. But, all I had in my pantry drawer was orange intense chocolate from Lindt. And so, I made an orange mug cake. The great thing with this recipe is that it is super versatile. So you can make any flavour you like, using chocolate you have at home.
