Every overseas trip we like to eat at one really top notch restaurant if possible. On our visit to England this year Dave and I went to The Tavern Broom. They make local seasonal food which is perfectly aligned with the way we love to eat.
Chef patrons Fritz Ronneburg and Richard Walton found an historical 16th Century public house in Broom, lying empty. They restored it, bringing the building back to life with a pub and restaurant. This has to be one of the best meals we have ever eaten and if we are ever close to the area, we will go back!
As The Tavern serves dishes created that day from what is in season, the menu has changed since we were there. Dave and I had the oriental pork belly (£8.95) to share as our starter. This was served with a miso carrot purée, sesame dressing, chilli marinated pok choi and crackling. Dave had the butter roasted fillet of cod for his main course (£16). This was served with Wye Valley asparagus, cherry vine tomatoes, creamed potatoes, samphire and parsley cream. I had the butter roasted lamb cannon (£19.95). I chose this dish as I have never cooked with lamb cannon and wanted to see if it was worth buying (it is). It was served with broad beans, peas and asparagus, shallots, a pea and watercress purée, Jersey Royal new potatoes and a mint jus. Given the generosity of our main courses, we did not have dessert.
What they offer
You can sit at the bar at The Tavern Broom, enjoying a beer or cider on tap, some fine wine, or a cocktail. Bar nibbles are on offer as well as a simple lunch menu and Sunday roast lunch. Breakfast is served on a Saturday from 10am – 12pm. The menu is also available for take out. Expect to find traditional beer battered fish and chips as a mainstay. And they offer a children’s menu. Contact them on +441789 778199.
