October 2020 was meant to be the month we went overseas. Despite our borders being open this did not happen. Italy was on the ‘green’ list but would not allow South Africans to visit. And The Netherlands was on the red list. So instead Dave and I spent four days on a South African road trip.
Some Sous Vide Time
Experimenting with my sous vide cooker is still an ongoing affair. Last month I made Sous Vide Scrambled Eggs, and Sous Vide Short Ribs.
Of course there was baking and treats
I started off with cocoa brownies using solid cacao and then moved on to salted caramel scrolls. One Sunday I made semolina crumpets and when the weather was good I made a Dutch Oven sourdough. Needing another signature recipe I made lavender and lime shortbread.
Making My Own and Recipe Testing
While clearing out my freezer I found a bag of red currants and used them to make red currant conserve. I also made my own chicken noodles from scratch. In October 2020 I published a few recipes from a recipe book I reviewed. First there was an onion and cider soup, followed by a recipe for chocolate sorbet.
One New Thing In My Kitchen October 2020
A friend and I often have a quick coffee when we are together, and she gave me these double walled coffee cups as a gift. Here you can see them on the floating shelf we have put into our guest bedroom. It’s sole function is to hold the Nespresso machine we got for our guests to use.
This is my November submission to the #IMK series, hosted by Sherry. Each month bloggers around the world gather to share what is new in their kitchens. Pop on over to her blog to take a peek.

To a life well lived in 2020!
A lovely post Tandy, and we are gearing up for a short road trip just to get away for a few days. What a great idea to put a coffee machine in your guest bedroom with nice cups. That gesture has got me thinking, I am decluttering our guest bedroom in readiness for Christmas. I’ve never been to South Africa, and it’s not that far from Perth really, would love to get there one day. All the best and stay safe, Pauline
Enjoy your road trip! Hope you manage to get here one day 🙂
I’m so sad about not traveling as well. It’s just been a weird shitty year in so many ways. And now I’m sitting here waiting to hear about our election. The whole year sounds like a bad country song! However, I’m trying to stay positive. And healthy. Anyway, I love those double walled cups as well.
I hope your ‘country song’ ends well with the election result you want 🙂
Your kitchen has been busy this month! The chocolate desserts look especially good.
be well… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Thank you Mae 🙂
I dream of the day we can travel again (and see family)! Love all the baking!
Seeing family is my main priority right now as well 🙂
I know you are anxious to travel again, but I hope you enjoyed your four-day road-trip…
We enjoyed it immensely. I am not as anxious to travel as I am in need to see our child 🙂
thanks for joining in tandy. what a shame about your trip. lots of people in the same boat this year. how lucky are your guests!? their own coffee – fabulous. love those double glazed cups. lots of fab cooking going on in your kitchen lately. proper chocolate sorbet is a fave of mine. keep well and take care

Thanks Sherry, and you take care as well. Our guest room is like a mini hotel with lots of creature comforts.
Well even though your travel fell through, it looks like you accomplished a whole lot Tandy!
Thank you, I managed to keep busy 🙂
Love the idea of onion cider soup..
Thank you Lisa, it was so good 🙂
Salted caramel scrolls! That is going straight on my list of things I want to try 🙂 Love how organised you are with all your blog posts
Thank you Nancy, and enjoy the scrolls 🙂
Tandy, sorry to hear your travel plans were re-routed, but it sounds like you made the best of it. You also made the most mouthwatering baked goods! Salted caramel scrolls and semolina crumpets caught my eye, but your signature Lavender & Lime shortbread caught my imagination… sigh. I’m sure they tasted as good as they sounded and looked! Wishing I could have a bowl of your chicken soup with the homemade noodles, too. Wonderful post!
Thanks Kim, and yes, we made the most of our new plans 🙂
