It is a well known fact that Easter marks the start of winter in the Western Cape. It usually rains at least one day over the long weekend, scuppering plans for outside entertainment. However, Easter was early in April 2026, and winter did not show her face until the middle of the month. It will soon be cold enough for soups and casseroles, and comforting dishes. I went to Johannesburg for the last week of the month so that my parents could travel overseas. My timing was excellent as a friend from Australia was there at the same time, and we could enjoy each other’s company when I was not at work.
Recipes from my blog in April 2026
I shared two compound butter recipes, one for sardine butter and the other a more unique recipe for caper mocha butter. A large batch of furikake was made to go on top of my okonomiyaki. It was also used as a topping for sourdough pretzels. And, I perfected my remoulade sauce that was served with fish cakes. Then there was a lamb and onion pie which is perfect for the upcoming cooler weather in the Southern Hemisphere.
One new thing in my kitchen
Dave decided that he would prefer a long loaf of bread, rather than a round one. So, I bought a new banneton which I have used several times already. I also bought a lame for scoring the dough. At present, I am working on a new sourdough recipe and part of the experiment is how best to score the dough. I am not trying to do anything fancy, just working on what anyone can achieve at home, without feeling intimidated.
This is my May submission to the #IMK series hosted by Sherry. Each month bloggers around the world gather to share what is new in their kitchens.

Round or oval, the bread tastes the same :-))
indeed it does 😉
All of your recipes sound very good. I love lamb and your lamb, and onion pie sounds so delicious. I will give that a try. Have a wonderful May!!
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy the pie 🙂
Such a lovely and thoughtful roundup, Tandy! I really enjoy these monthly posts – a nice glimpse into your kitchen and everything you’ve been creating.
Thank you so much!
I need to make time to try the lamb pie you shared this month.

It is flying by indeed!
I’m excited to see you put that beautiful new bread basket to use. The lame is so gorgeous, I’d be inspired to make a thousand loaves just to keep using it.
It is quite fun to use 🙂
It is true you are soon going to start to enjoy soups and casseroles with Winter arriving soon. This year in Chicago we did not have a spring yet and I feel it is going to switch to Summer very soon. Last night it finally snowed in Colorado ; there was not any snow this year to ski, can you believe this??! Crazy, right! I hope hope you get to enjoy these nice and cozy nights, ~Nessa
wow, that is quite something about the snow being so late in Colorado! Chicago is the coldest city I have ever been to 😉
Although it’s technically spring here in the UK, sometimes it feels cold enough to be winter! What a delicious month in your kitchen, I wish I had the skills and patience to make my own bread. Can’t wait to see the new shaped loaf!
I am putting bread making on hold while it is raining 😉
oh look at that lame it is a real beauty.. possibly only appreciated by sourdough bakers 🙂 so even though we are in France I have a lot of trouble explaining to people that I have a “levain” (sourdough starter) because they simply don’t understand what it is, or what it’s for since you can duck downstairs and get bread anywhere. Barney is turning 9 next month! crazy how times go..
There is nothing like French bread!! But, making your own is so satisfying 🙂
