Hila Jonker Interview

Next in my line up, is Hila Jonker who blogs over at Add To Taste. Please do take a look at her blog, and I am sure you will find her as fantastic a person as I do. Hila has recently become a mother – well, nearly a year ago, and she has another blog The Mommy Journey which is worth following, even if you are not a mother yourself.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
My Dad.

What started you on the path of cooking?
My Aunt, my dad’s sister, used to let my sister and I sit in the kitchen while she baked and cooked.

Which three ingredients could you not live without?
A good piece of meat, salt and garlic

Which of your kitchen tools would you take with you anywhere and everywhere?
My Cook’s knife, wok and a wooden spoon

Do you have any pet peeves in the kitchen?
My husband leaves teaspoons everywhere and there are never any clean ones

Which meal is your all time favourite?
My mom’s chicken soup

Which restaurant could you visit over and over again?
Tough one. For a light lunch – I love my Laundry (they are a laundry but they do the most delicious dim sum). Wang Thai in lagoon beach for Thai, Chuck Yang’s in Rondebosch for Chinese, Sake in sable square for sushi. If I could I would go to De Grendel’s restaurant all the time too.

If you could only have one recipe book, which one would it be?
The internet!

If you could work alongside one chef for a day who would that be?
Heston Blumenthal

Which ingredient will you not eat or cook with?
So far, the only thing I have tasted and hated has been tripe

What is on top of your bucket list?
Food wise: Fat Duck
Life wise: Holiday with the family to Israel and Europe

What is your food philosophy?
“Try everything at least twice, the first time it could have been prepared badly” and “I have no sacred cows, I ate them all”

Any parting words for the readers?
Try everything, be messy, think of the kitchen as a grown up play park.

  1. Interesting, that’s the second raving recommendation for De Grendel’s restaurant in the past two days so I think it’s time to try it out. You keen T?

I would ♥ to hear from you (comments will be visible when I reply)
