May 2022 started off with us playing the waiting game. Our Passports had gone into the embassy in April for our UK Visas. And all we had to do was wait patiently for them to be returned. As soon as I got them back I started shopping. I decided to take a lot of gifts with me to the UK, as well as some good South African wine. We leave tonight for a 2 week holiday.
On the savoury side
I made garganelli and caramelized shallots and anchovies as part of my current obsession with Italian food. We are desperately trying to book a trip for next year. I also boiled some whole beetroots as part of a recipe book review.
On the sweet side
First off I baked a yuzu angel food cake as I had lots of egg whites to use up. I baked a date and olive oil chocolate cake and topped it with a caramel ganache. And in order to make some frosting recipes for this month I made my own icing sugar.
I went on a smoothie making mission when testing the make your own smoothie section of a book I was sent to review. This is a great resource if you need some inspiration. My favourite was the banana and peanut butter smoothie.
May 2022 curveball
This is the first time I am contributing anything towards the curveball. For me it was toilet bombs!
New Item in May 2022
I really wanted something from Delft when we went to the city to explore. The hand painted ceramics are extremely expensive, and we don’t have space to add to what we already have. The smaller, mass produced items did not catch my eye. Until I saw this bottle stopper. Dave and I have a small glass of Port every Friday and Saturday night. It differentiates the week from the weekend for us. A friend kindly provides the Port from his vast collection of vintages he produced over the years. This bottle stopper is the most fitting way to showcase the Port and a memory.
This is my June submission to the #IMK series hosted by Sherry. Each month bloggers around the world gather to share what is new in their kitchens.
