Birthday Microwave Cake

Most years for my birthday I host a dinner party. If I do this at home, we are the same three couples. I will go all out with the menu, doing starters, mains and a fancy dessert. Last year I did not do anything for personal reasons. And this year I am giving it a miss as well as the one couple are travelling overseas. But, I still plan on celebrating, and will be making a birthday microwave cake for myself.

I don’t usually ‘advertise’ that it is my birthday, and to be clear, today is not the day. But other than the birthday microwave cake recipe I am sharing, I thought I would make note of some historical facts that occured on the day. In 306, Constantine I was proclaimed emperor of Rome, with an Arch eventually being built near the Colosseum to mark his victory over Maxentius. Constantinople is recaptured in 1261 to re-establish the Byzantine Empire. The first battle to see the extensive use of firearms began in Italy in 1467. In 1554 Mary I of England married Phillip II of Spain and in 1596 Henry IV of France converted to Roman Catholicism. Tsar Peter the Great began the construction of Kadriorg Palace in Tallinn in 1718. 1783 sees the last action of the American Revolutionary War when the Siege of Cuddalore is ended.

A few more things that happened on my birthday

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completes his Symphony No. 40 in G Minor in 1788. In 1797 Horatio Nelson loses his right arm during his failed attempt to conquer Tenerife. Napoleon Bonaparte is victorious at the Battle of Abukir in 1799. In 1814 Canada repulse an attack against them by the Americans. (I wonder what would happen now if Trump decided to attack?). The first constant electric light is demonstrated in Dundee in 1835. And then in 1837 the first electrical telegraph transmission takes place. The process for making MSG is patented in 1908. 1909 sees the first flight across the English Channel. Income Tax is introduced as a temporary measure in Canada in 1917. 108 years later …… need I say more?  In 1934 The Nazis assassinate Engelbert Dollfuss, the Austrian Chancellor. This failed coup attempt is a sign of things to come, which I feel were ignored!

World War II onwards

Despite being neutral in WWII, the Swiss Army are ordered to resist German invasion in 1940, with surrendering being illegal. In Norway they call for nonviolent resistance to German occupation in 1942, and a year later, Benito Mussolini is forced out of office by the King. In 1946 the first underwater nuclear weapon is tested. Today we pray that nuclear weapons are never deployed! John F. Kennedy makes a speech in 1961 stating that any attack on Berlin is an attack on Nato. Nixon issues a doctrine in 1969 stating that Vietnam needs to take care of their own military defence. Just under four years later American troops finally withdraw from Vietnam.

After my birth

The Soviets launch Mars 5 in 1973 and 3 years later, the Viking I takes the famous Face on Mars photo. Louise Joy Brown, the first IVF baby, is born today in 1978. In 1979 Israel begins its withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula, after the Camp David Accords, marking the beginning of peace between Israel and Egypt. Fourteen years later Israel launches an attack on Lebanon to try and remove Hezbollah from the region. How different would the region have been had they been successful? In 1993 the A.P.L.A. killed 11 people during the Saint James Church massacre in Cape Town. Israel and Jordan sign the Washington Declaration in 1994, ending 46 years of war between the two nations. In 2000 the Concorde crash in Paris kills 113 people. Ten years later, WikiLeaks publishes classified documents about the War in Afghanistan.

  1. First off, happy birthday to you Tandy! As regards dates and events, I saw a marvellous video by Sandi Toksvig about the project she has been working on for a couple of years where they research and update info about important stuff done by women and people of non-white heritage. Fascinating stuff!

  2. I love a microwave mug cake – and this looks delicious. Happy Early birthday Tandy. I was intrigued reading through all those events, a lot of things happened on your birthdate – thanks for sharing those.

  3. Well – reading this, I am wishing you the happiest of birthdays on the correct day! Tandy, in this crazy world of ours, may your year to come be as healthy and happy ad productive as you wish and as is possible. Sending warm hugs and fun vibes!!! Like your ‘cupcake’ . . like the homework you have done as to ‘what happened that day’ even more . . . absolutely love Tsar Peter and Kadrioru Loss being mentioned as that place played a big part in my childhood . . . that was where our President lived and worked at the time. There was this big conference room . . . well, Dad being in the Government was often there . . , and I was very oft taken along (long story), to colour picture books under the table or go to sleep in the PM’s lap > absolutely true story 🙂 !!!

  4. Hi Tandy, I am impressed that you know these facts about your birthday and what happened afterwards. I have never looked up events on my birthday. I do know I share the day with Lord Baden Powell who started the scouts movement in Mafeking during the siege.

    1. That is an interesting person to share your birthday with! Have you driven Baden Powell drive and gone to the Scouts Museum?

I would ♥ to hear from you (comments will be visible when I reply)
