I had thought that the heatwave had ended, but March 2026 proved me wrong. And, it was one of the hottest weeks we have had for ages. The temperature did not drop at night, making it even worse. And, despite Gordons Bay being known for the wind, it did not blow. That being said, we also had cooler days and rain, which our dams really need. I spent most Saturdays out of the house, which meant less cooking and baking for me. I am going to have to get on top of that soon, or I shall run out of recipes to share on the blog.
Recipes from my blog in March 2026
Despite having a pile of books to review, this month I concentrated on my own recipes. I made cheesy salami bread from Jan Braai Junior In The Kitchen. The book was donated to our street library and it was taken the same day! I hope it makes some child very happy. While on a spree of compound butters I made confit garlic butter. And for lunch one day I made Dave and I hake fish cakes. They are so simple to make at home, and the recipe is really versatile. To satisfy my sweet tooth I dried some cherries to use in black forest rusks and a chocolate ginger slice. And I baked a batch of chocolate macadamia biscuits for good measure.
One new thing in my kitchen
Last year I collected stickers from our local hypermarket in order to get a glass container. I only had enough stickers for the one size smaller than this. But, as they did not have stock I got the larger container. It is perfect for taking sweet treats to work.

Like the look of your glass container from the supermarket and loved the fish cakes and butters recipes as you published thru’ the month. We had record heat for March here, too! At this rate, we’ll be broiling by June… But, at least there are delicious things to eat along the way. Always good to see what you’re cooking up!

Your story of collecting stickers reminded me of once when I saved up to get a 2 in 1 pot with a steam insert (for my daughter). Sometimes those schemes turn out to be pretty good.
P.S. I really love the chocolate ginger slice.

It’s been quite hot here in Atlanta, GA, USA too – we usually wait until April to turn on the AC but it’s been so hot at night, we have it running now. By the way, cute glass dish and you did some amazing bakes in March!
