October 2024 started off with a coffee date with a friend who I do not see nearly often enough. It was special to just spend time with her, and it was followed with another get together with a friend we usually see as a couple. Sometimes it is great to just have girls’ time. Dave and I tried a new restaurant for his birthday. And I met my aunt for coffee, which took a lot of planning. My plan for October was to get ahead of myself with scheduled blog posts.
Recipes I shared in October 2024
This month was heavy on the savoury side. I made broccoli fritters which were baked and not fried. Sikil pak was made, devoured and enjoyed all in the blink of an eye. As part of my recipe testing for Mexico in Mzansi I made Japanese seven spice, pico de gallo, crispy quinoa salad and braised lamb tacos. Also from the book were several mugs of Mexican hot chocolate. Surprisingly, the month started off with snow, and a few days later we had a mini heat wave! On the sweet side there was also a batch of almond and cranberry biscuits.
One new thing in my kitchen
I am always on the lookout for new flours to try, and buckwheat is the most recent one. I have already used it to make scones. And don’t expect that recipe until August next year! It is a great substitute for wheat flour, and I am excited to try more recipes using it. Have you tried this flour?
This is my November submission to the #IMK series hosted by Sherry. Each month bloggers around the world gather to share what is new in their kitchens.

I love that lamb stew (without taco) the most! The biscuits are great too.
Tha lamb stew was worth making again 🙂
Hi Tandy. It’s been awhile. Love to see what is in everyone’s kitchen. I actually have a great recipe using buckwheat flour to make chocolate chip cookies. They are very good! Hope you are well.
Oooh, I need to look for that!
