Bad service is spelled: j–h–n–a–s–n–a–v–u–e–n. Before I spend a lot of money on something I want to make sure I’m getting exactly what I need. The tech guru I listen to on the radio rates the Apple iPad as the best tablet on the market. My BlackBerry PlayBook is still functional but no longer up-to-date. I researched the various iPads and chose to purchase an iPad mini 4 in the new year. However, my mom told me they were having a 20% price hike on the 1st of January and at R7000 already, this was the limit I wanted to spend. Dave went with me to Somerset Mall and even though I could get the iPad at 5% less at Dion Wired, I chose to go to the Istore as they offer free, unlimited backup and support. I waited in the queue for a free sales assistant and AB was the first person available. I queried the price and she said she would inform her manager as they should be the cheapest. When she planned on doing that was not clear. She then asked if I wanted a silver, gold, or space grey back cover. I queried the difference and she told me that the front screen border would be black or white depending on my choice. As I prefer the clean look of the white surround I was told I could get silver or gold. Before I made my choice I enquired whether the protective cover covered the back. I was told all covers concealed the rear so I told her the colour would not matter. Turns out she was wrong! They did not have generic covers in stock and at this stage I was not offered the Apple cover which only protects the screen. Had I been offered this I would have asked for the gold backed iPad. But she chose silver for me. She sold me a glass screen guard and charged me for the items and attempted to process my Diners Card. After 2 attempts she worked out that the store does not take that specific card. I then paid with my Amex card and she opened the box and tried to put the screen guard on. This failed as it did not fit and so the assistant sales manager was called. The assistant sales manager was aware of this problem and I was now peeved off that I would have an iPad with no screen protection, or cover protection what-so-ever. The assistant sales manager then came back to me with an offer of a 5% discount on an original cover at which stage my sense of humour failed. The manager was called and out walked the man who had interrupted my sale as he didn’t want to assist a customer. He would not listen to my complaint, bullied the sales staff and I left upset, without my iPad being set up, the details of the sale explained to me and not even a bag for the box. I had not had the iPad for 5 minutes and already I was regretting my purchase! This is a huge investment for me and something I have saved the entire year for.

The one thing I never regret is baking bread. This recipe for butternut bread was a total experiment as I chose to make it in the oven. The original recipe calls for the bread to be cooked in a pot which you place into the coals of a barbecue.
Butternut Bread
Ingredients
for the dough
- 500 g bread flour, plus extra for dusting
- 350 mls water
- 5 g instant dried yeast
- 20 g fructose
- 20 g salt
for the butternut
- 1 small butternut, peeled and cut into small cubes
- olive oil for drizzling
- salt and freshly ground black pepper to season
for the bread
- butter for greasing
- maize meal for dusting
- 1 small handful pumpkin seeds
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200° Celsius
- Place the flour, water, yeast, fructose and salt into the bowl of a stand mixer
- Mix on a low speed for 1 minute
- Increase the speed and mix for 3 minutes
- Turn out onto a lightly floured surface
- Knead until smooth and the gluten has developed
- Place the dough into a bowl and cover with a dish towel
- Leave to prove until doubled in size
- Place the butternut into an oven proof dish
- Drizzle with olive oil and season to taste
- Place into the oven and bake for 50 minutes
- Remove and set aside to cool
- Lightly grease a lidded casserole dish (I used my cocotte)
- Dust with the maize meal
- Remove the dough from the bowl and gently knock it down
- Roll the dough into a ball and place seam side down into the dish
- Place the butternut on top of the dough and sprinkle on the pumpkin seeds
- Cover with lightly oiled cling film and set aside to rise by a third
- Preheat the oven to 200° Celsius
- Remove the cling film and place the lid onto your dish
- Bake for 2 hours
- Remove from the oven
- Remove the bread from the dish and serve

What a frustrating experience for you! I’m always astonished at how some people think it’s OK to treat their staff and customers poorly. 🙁 The bread, however, does sound marvelous. 🙂
He does not deserve the power he has at all!
Happy New Year!
What a creative recipe. I love bread and butternut squash, so it makes sense to put them together 🙂
Happy new year to you as well!
Your iPad story is so frustrating! I think that’s why I delegate all tech sales and purchases to my husband. I just feel like we live in a sexist world overall and my husband NEVER gets bullied or ignored, while I get pushed over! Anyhow, I can see why you make this bread, I’m really excited because I have 3 butternut squashes sitting in my sunroom that need to get used. I have never thought to use squash this way! Thanks =)
My husband nearly dragged me out of the store as he was so cross about the way the manager refused to listen!
Delicious bread but what the run around at the apple store. Geez.. the staff here in HK apple flag store are wonderful.
Wish I could say the same for here Bobbi 🙂
Oh Tandy so sorry to hear about your ipad incident! Did you contact Apple online and see if they could resolve it?
BTW – this bread sounds delightful – and so comforting especially after such disappointment!
I sent an email to iStore head office but bad service continues and I have had no response.
Yum. I would absolutely love this bread. It looks delicious Tandy.
Thanks Pam 🙂
I so know how you’re feeling. I quit from buying few things because of the service. Also I don’t go to few cafes and restaurants because of it. When we buy something, doesn’t matter if it was expensive, we should have a good customer service. Big big hug to you!
You are so right Marta! And a big hug back 🙂
What a great unique recipe! I never heard of putting butternut pieces in a bread, but the resulting bread looks delicious!
Thanks Melanie 🙂
What a horrible experience! But I do hope you enjoy your iPad 🙂 And this bread looks absolutely beautiful!
I am loving the iPad!
That looks fantastic! Oh Tandy, I’m on my New Year diet and will have to pass but will come back here as sausages are one thing that I am craving and it appears that this bread goes well with them.
Good luck with your diet and enjoy the sausages and bread when you get to eat them 🙂
Sorry to hear that you regretted your purchase Tandy. I wonder what you would make of service in Australia. It is very…variable! A gorgeous sounding bread.
Service is variable here as well!
Hi Tandy, i just bought an Iphone but took my husband as it seems no one can ignore him, but I seem to be invisable, quite frustrating, love your butternut bread, I just bought a small squash a few days ago, thanks!
It is so wrong that men are treated with more respect in stores!
Wow sorry for the terrible shopping experience. but hat bread, looks AWESOME!
Thanks Evelyne 🙂
What an interesting looking bread! I love all the ingredients you used and I’m sure they taste delicious in combination. So creative 🙂
Thank you so much for the visit Sarah 🙂
I made this lovely bread & it was superb!! I also have a similar type of bread that I created & posted a while ago: A pumpkin, feta & red onion yeasted bread:
