In January a friend of ours from Zimbabwe came to visit us. Her daughter and partner were here from England and she wanted to see them. Rosey asked where we could go for lunch and after much discussion, Paulina’s Restaurant At Rickety Bridge was the chosen venue.
Paulina’s Restaurant At Rickety Bridge
On a very hot summers day we drove through to Franschoek for our lunch date. Rickety Bridge is one of the first wineries we visited when we moved here in 2001. But, it is the first time we have eaten at Paulina’s. Luckily we had chosen to sit inside as the sun was unbearable. We had a beautiful view over the vineyards looking towards the mountains, and a breeze to keep us cool.
Our meal
Dave and I shared the grilled octopus (R120) which was the best octopus we have ever had, eating out. It was served in a Korean sticky sauce with a pak choi salad. Tom had the babotie spring rolls (R130) and he really enjoyed his first taste of this take on a South African dish. For mains Kayla and I had the fish poke bowl (R195), and it was an amazing meal. Served with black rice and edamame beans, I chose to have mine without the grilled pineapple. Other meals at the table included the slow roasted pork belly (R245) and the beef cheeks (R245). From the fact that everyone would go back, I can tell you this was a memorable meal.
Service and more
Service was impeccable, and part of the reason we would go back. Paulina de Villiers, after whom the restaurant is named, was one of the first female landowners in South Africa. Chef Wesley Papier pays homage to her, and the land, by sourcing from local producers and farmers. Bookings are advised, especially in summer. Contact them on +27 21 876 2129. Other than the restaurant, you can do a wine tasting in their wine tasting venue. Or stay over in the accommodation on the farm.
