Sour Cream Flatbreads

I was in the mood for hummus and decided that some flatbreads would go perfectly with it to scoop up the chickpea goodness. We had friends staying with us the week before, and Kim had bought some sour cream to go on our baked potatoes. I used the left overs to make these sour cream flatbreads.

Setting up the scam

A while ago I was contacted by someone claiming to be from my cell phone provider. He told me he was calling from MTN Menlyn Park, and that a Dawn Coetzee was there to do a SIM swap. Knowing this to be a scam, I hung up and blocked the number. A few months later, I got the exact same phone call. Again, I hung up and hit the block option. Then, last month I did a SIM swap, changing my physical SIM for an eSIM. I started the procedure on the Wednesday and finalised it the following day. On the Friday I got a phone call, this time purporting to be from MTN Head Office. The gentleman asked if I had done a SIM swap the previous day.

The next steps

He told me there was a SIM swap hanging in the system for Dawn Coetzee that he needed to clear. And he informed me that if it was not cleared, my line would be blocked. He let me know that he was sending a link to my phone that I had to follow. I was quite suspicious, and said I would call him back. Before I could even do so, the SMS came through from MTNID, their official APP, and he called back, telling me it was urgent. Again I said I would call back. I phoned MTN directly and they told me that the scam works because they send the request for the OTP through the APP by entering my number on their phone. This explains why so many people get caught, as it looks and sound legitimate. And only someone who works for MTN could have seen that I had done the SIM swap!
