This recipe for a post-workout protein smoothie is from Jamie Oliver’s latest book, Eat Yourself Healthy. This was a perfect recipe for me to test, as I make a smoothie every weekday morning. I would suggest adding some ginger to this recipe to make it less bland.

Adding protein to your diet
When I was in my twenties, I trained at a small gym with a group of friends. Some of them were in to serious body building, which meant eating a lot of protein. I have a tendency to build muscle easily, and decided to give the protein boost a try. One of the guys at the gym told me about adding more eggs to my diet, as well as tinned tuna. A few afternoons after this conversation, I opened a tin of tuna, and cut the webbing between my thumb and index finger quite badly. I bundled the toddler into his car seat and drove the our local pharmacy where my friend was a nurse. She poured friars balsam onto the cut, which stopped the bleeding immediately. And stung like hell! Now, every time I open a tin of tuna, I think of that day.
Hoping for smoother times
In November of last year, some climate scientists warned the City of Cape Town we would head for day zero again soon. The reason was two-fold. One, people are using more water now than when dam levels were critical. And two, they did not expect a good winter’s rainfall. Last month we had a lot of rain. Dam levels rose rapidly, which was great. But damage from flooding was extensive. Roads were washed away, rock falls hit the passes, and some areas were cut off from all resources. Coupled with the rain were high winds, causing roofs to blow off, and building damage was visible across the region. When this happens, my heart goes out to all the people affected. And this time, it was closer to home than usual, as my staff member had part of his roof destroyed.

Oddly enough smoothies and I have never been friends . . . absolutely nought against them – they just have not come my way 🙂 ! But – yours looks rather delightful and I trust most things from Jamie’s stable as well . . . have everything here but rolled oats . . . so have to try this after the next shop . . . but I certainly shall . . . might fit in well instead of one of my huge wraps and coffee 🙂 !
Or a great lunch for a hot day!
Not a fan of smoothie or protein powder…always a huge steak after my morning workout.
Nice that you have the time to do that!
I think ginger sounds like a great addition!
I am quite a fan of ginger which is why I add it to my smoothies every day 🙂
I don’t like smoothies but the recipe is interesting. I’m sorry to read about the damage your staff member experienced. I read the DA is trying to get disaster funding. Ha! From our government who’ve practically bankrupted the country.
Hopefully they can raise the funds needed! The Franschhoek Pass has to be sorted out properly 🙂
A great way to start the day.
Thank you Pam 🙂
ooh yes i am often cutting myself with knives or tins or whatever. i don’t even notice till later usually …

Hopefully you don’t leave too much blood everywhere!
Interesting blend! Cottage cheese certainly is having a moment. I bet this would be good with tofu instead, for us dairy-free folk. 🙂
Please try it that way and let me know!
This looks great, Tandy! I’m not a fan of protein powders, so I really like this cottage cheese version with oats and banana.
I think a lot of people do not like protein powders. I use pea protein powder in my smoothies, but they do have a texture to them 🙂
Funny how food can carry such vivid memories.
Your tuna tin story made me wince and smile at the same time.
This smoothie looks like a good way to start the day, especially with that ginger twist.

I still wince at the memory of it!
